Greetings Civic Comrades! Tom Tresser here from the CivicLab Chicago.

We have been running a powerful and popular civic investigation and engagement campaign around Tax Increment Financing Districts (TIFs) since 2013. TIFs are created by a municipality in the name of "development" and steal property taxes away from local units of government and place these $ in secretive accounts controlled by the local mayor. These funds then are gifted to private developers.

The TIF Illumination Project uses data mining, investigatory journalism, graphic design, and the tactics of popular education to uncover and teach what is happening to our public dollars.

Looking for organizations and campaigns that are in the same space of investigating and organizing against corporate welfare, public subsidies for private development, and building real grassroots prosperity.
